Loss Selling Mechanics Deep-Dive

An educational look at why loss selling works as a business in Torn City, and which in-game systems it interacts with.

What a "loss" actually gives the buyer

When you deliberately arrange to lose a fight against your own chosen opponent, the person you are paying to lose to (a "loss seller") is giving you:

  • A safe attack target. You get to hit someone who will not fight back or retaliate outside the arranged terms.
  • A controlled respect/experience gain. Winning any fight gives you experience and, if the opponent is a fair match, respect toward your faction's chain and rank.
  • Defend stat exposure. Repeatedly fighting against real (if cooperating) opponents is one of the few ways to train and validate your battle stats against another live player rather than a bot.

Merits, experience, and defend stats

  • Experience scales with the relative stat gap and the opponent's level; a loss seller who keeps stats within a sane range makes sure the buyer's gains stay meaningful instead of trivial.
  • Merits - several in-game merits (see and defend-farming-merit-checklist.md, item
    1. are unlocked by total attack counts, win streaks, or specific fight outcomes. Loss selling is one of the few reliable, scheduled ways to hit those thresholds.
  • Defend stats - "defends" are fights where you are the one defending (being attacked). A seller taking a loss is, from Torn's perspective, defending and then losing; this is exactly the mechanic the mercenary package leans on for defend-farming campaigns.

Why this needs a marketplace and rules at all

Loss selling only works if:

  1. The loss is real and verifiable (Relay confirms it via the Torn API attack log, not by trusting either side's word).
  2. Nobody uses the fight to actually steal money (see anti-mug-policy.md).
  3. Payment is escrowed and released automatically on verification, so neither side can walk away after the other delivers.

That is the entire reason Relay exists: it is the trust layer that turns "two strangers agreeing to a fake fight over Discord DMs" into a safe, repeatable, audited transaction.

Practical tips for maximizing value

  • Buyers: order in batches that match how fast sellers are online, so hits do not sit unclaimed and expire your claim windows for nothing.
  • Sellers: keep your energy topped up (see ) so you can claim and deliver quickly - claims expire if you sit on them.
