In-Game Cash Safety Guide

Sellers and buyers both end up holding real Torn cash around Relay transactions. Here is how to keep it from getting stolen.

The threat: getting mugged for your own payout

The irony of loss selling is that you deliberately let strangers win fights against you for a living. That makes you a visible target for opportunistic muggers who are not part of your Relay contract. Two main risks:

  1. Someone outside the contract mugs you while your defenses are down from actual gameplay (unrelated to Relay).
  2. You are holding a large cash balance after a cashout and forget to secure it.

Ghost-trading

"Ghost-trading" means moving cash through a trade window to a trusted second account or faction member rather than holding it on your active character, so a successful mug nets the attacker nothing. If your faction supports it:

  1. Open a trade with your trusted holder.
  2. Add the cash, confirm both sides, complete the trade immediately.
  3. Do this before you go do anything risky (loss selling, chain hitting, traveling), not after.

Vault banking

Torn's faction vault (or your own money vault, if unlocked) is safer than holding cash on-person:

  • Deposit cashout payouts into the vault as soon as they land instead of letting them sit on your character.
  • Withdraw only what you need for the next purchase (energy refills, boosters) rather than pulling out your whole balance at once.
  • If your faction vault has withdrawal limits or a waiting period, plan cashout timing around that.

Practical checklist

  • [ ] Never hold a cashout payout on-person longer than necessary.
  • [ ] Vault or ghost-trade immediately after a payout lands.
  • [ ] Keep your "working cash" (for energy/boosters) separate from savings you have vaulted away.
  • [ ] Be extra careful right after a public chain or war, when opportunistic mugging spikes server-wide.
  • (item 883) for coordinating payout timing across timezones.
  • for how admins send your payout in the first place.
